Moltkia petraea

Moltkia petraea is a perennial subshrub belonging to the Boraginaceae family. Renowned for its vibrant blue-violet flowers and compact, mounding habit, it is a highly sought-after plant for rock gardens and xeriscapes where soil quality is poor and drainage is essential.

The species originates from the limestone mountainous regions of the Balkans. Because of its native environment, the plant is remarkably adapted to rocky, calcareous substrates. It thrives in exposed conditions, which makes it an excellent candidate for gardens located in harsh or arid climates.

Botanically, it features semi-woody stems and narrow, gray-green foliage covered in fine hairs. The flowers bloom in terminal clusters, typically appearing from late spring through early summer, providing a vivid contrast against the foliage and surrounding rock surfaces.

Cultivation requires careful attention to soil composition and water management. Moltkia petraea demands exceptionally well-draining, alkaline soil.
