Mountain soursop

Mountain soursop (Annona montana Macfad.) is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Annonaceae family. Often confused with its more famous relative, the soursop (Annona muricata), this species is uniquely valued for its hardiness and ability to thrive at higher elevations, which distinguishes it within the genus.

Native to the Caribbean and Central and South America, this tree is now found throughout humid tropical regions worldwide. It is cultivated in various environments, serving as a staple fruit tree in traditional home gardens and as a research subject for agricultural development due to its robustness against environmental stressors.

Botanically, the tree exhibits a robust growth habit, reaching heights of 10 meters or more. Its leaves are broad, glossy, and leathery. The fruits are generally rounder than those of the common soursop, featuring a thick skin with small, fleshy spines. The pulp is highly aromatic and acidic, making it a favorite ingredient for traditional juices and local desserts.

Regarding cultivation, this species requires well-drained, fertile soil and high humidity. While it is more cold-tolerant than other Annona species, it still requires protection from severe frost. Effective management includes standard pruning to maintain tree health and ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged to prevent root rot during the rainy season.

In agriculture, the mountain soursop is primarily known for its role as an excellent rootstock for grafting more sensitive Annona species. This practice enhances the overall disease resistance and vigor of the scion. Pests such as mealybugs and scale insects are common challenges, necessitating integrated pest management strategies to ensure fruit quality and yield.
