Corsican forget-me-not

The Corsican forget-me-not (Myosotis corsicana) is a distinct herbaceous perennial belonging to the Boraginaceae family. Renowned for its vibrant blue flowers and compact habit, this species is highly valued by horticulturists for its ability to add intense color to specialized garden areas.

Native exclusively to the island of Corsica, this species naturally thrives in high-altitude habitats. It is commonly found in rocky screes and near natural water sources, which has shaped its specific environmental requirements. In modern horticulture, it is cultivated primarily in temperate regions within rock gardens and alpine settings.

Botanically, the plant grows to a height of approximately 15 to 30 centimeters. It features lanceolate leaves covered in fine hairs and produces clusters of small, deep-blue flowers. The flowering period typically occurs in late spring, creating a vivid display that remains attractive for several weeks.

Successful cultivation requires attention to soil and climate conditions. The plant prefers cool, semi-shaded locations with high moisture levels in the soil, yet it requires excellent drainage to prevent root rot. It thrives in soils that are slightly acidic to neutral and rich in organic matter. Avoid planting in areas with intense afternoon sun, as the plant is susceptible to heat stress.

The primary use of Myosotis corsicana is ornamental, serving as an excellent groundcover for rockeries and container gardens. Gardeners should monitor for common pests, such as slugs and snails, and be vigilant against fungal infections like powdery mildew, which can arise if air circulation is poor or if the plants are crowded together.
