Southern wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera) is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the Myricaceae family. It is ecologically significant due to its nitrogen-fixing capability, facilitated by its relationship with symbiotic actinomycetes, which allows it to thrive in nutrient-poor environments where other plants might struggle.

The plant is native to the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, and Central America. Its natural range encompasses diverse ecosystems, including swamps, coastal dunes, and forest edges. This wide distribution demonstrates the plant's remarkable adaptability to varying moisture levels and soil types, including sandy and saline conditions.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its glossy, aromatic, lance-shaped leaves and dense, multi-stemmed habit. Being dioecious, the plant requires both male and female specimens to produce its signature berries.
