Description
Red-stemmed water milfoil (scientific name: Myriophyllum rubricaule) is a perennial submersed aquatic plant belonging to the Haloragaceae family. It is distinct for its reddish-hued stems, which add significant aesthetic value to water gardens and indoor aquariums, setting it apart from its predominantly green relatives within the genus.
The native range of this species is primarily within the temperate zones of North America. It naturally inhabits slow-moving or stagnant freshwater environments, including ponds and lake edges. Its presence in these habitats is critical, as it contributes to water oxygenation and provides essential structure for various micro-fauna populations.
Botanically, Myriophyllum rubricaule features slender, branching stems arranged with whorled, feathery leaves. These leaves are finely dissected, which allows for efficient nutrient absorption directly from the water column. While the root system is primarily used for anchorage, it also plays a secondary role in mining mineral nutrients from the substrate.
Cultivation requirements are centered on high light intensity and carbon dioxide supplementation. For optimal growth, water temperature should ideally range between 18°C and 24°C. The soil substrate should be nutrient-rich, with a particular emphasis on iron, which acts as a vital cofactor in the development of the plant's characteristic red pigmentation.
In terms of economic and practical use, the plant is widely cultivated for the aquarium trade and aquatic landscaping. While generally robust, it is susceptible to various algal outbreaks if the nutrient balance in the water column is disrupted.
