Myrmecophila exaltata is a remarkable epiphytic orchid belonging to the Orchidaceae family. Often confused with the genus Schomburgkia in older literature, this species is highly valued by botanists and collectors for its structural complexity and its unique biological adaptation involving symbiotic relationships with ants in its native habitat.
The plant originates from the tropical forests of South America, particularly Venezuela and Colombia. As an epiphyte, it grows on the canopy of trees, which allows it to access high levels of solar radiation. This evolutionary adaptation requires the plant to have a robust structure to endure fluctuating humidity levels and strong tropical winds.
Botanically, this orchid is defined by its long, hollow, spindle-shaped pseudobulbs that provide a nesting space for ants. The leaves are leathery and thick, designed to minimize transpiration. The inflorescences are typically very long and bear numerous, waxy flowers that are prized for their longevity and vibrant color palette.
For successful cultivation, growers must replicate high-light conditions and provide excellent ventilation. The root system is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, necessitating a very coarse, well-draining potting medium such as large fir bark or cork mounts.
