Paperwhite narcissus

Paperwhite narcissus (Narcissus papyraceus) is a tender perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. It is widely recognized for its clusters of pure white, highly fragrant flowers. Unlike other narcissus species, this variety is exceptionally popular for indoor forcing during the winter months, requiring no complex cooling treatment to bloom.

Native to the Mediterranean region, the Paperwhite narcissus thrives in mild, wet winters and dry summers. Its natural range encompasses southern Europe and parts of North Africa. Due to its lack of frost tolerance, it is typically cultivated as a container plant in temperate climates, while outdoor cultivation is restricted to frost-free regions (Hardiness Zones 8-10).

Botanically, the plant features narrow, grass-like leaves and robust scapes that carry multiple blooms. The bulb is the primary storage organ, containing all the energy required for rapid leaf and flower production. The roots are relatively sensitive to waterlogging, necessitating a well-draining environment to prevent physiological disorders.

Cultivation requires bright, indirect light and moderate temperatures. When grown indoors, it is crucial to avoid overly warm spots, which can cause the foliage to grow "leggy" and flop over. Water management is critical: if growing in water or decorative stones, the base of the bulb should barely touch the water to prevent rot while allowing roots to reach moisture.
