Neotinea conica is a perennial herbaceous plant species belonging to the family Orchidaceae. This orchid is highly regarded for its distinctive, cone-shaped inflorescence, which distinguishes it within the genus Neotinea and makes it a subject of significant interest for botanical studies and conservationists.
The native distribution of this species is largely confined to the Mediterranean basin, including countries in Southern Europe and parts of North Africa. It typically thrives in open grasslands, rocky slopes, and scrublands. The plant is adapted to the Mediterranean climate, characterized by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
Botanically, the species is identified by its small, twin root tubers and a basal rosette of leaves, which are often spotted. The stem is relatively short, typically growing to a height of 10–30 cm. During the flowering period, it produces a dense, conical spike of small, pinkish-purple flowers that exhibit the complex floral morphology typical of orchids.
Cultivation of Neotinea conica is exceptionally challenging and not practiced on an agricultural scale. The species relies on complex mycorrhizal relationships with specific soil fungi to germinate and survive. It requires well-drained, alkaline, or limestone-rich soils and is highly intolerant of waterlogging, which can cause the root tubers to rot quickly.
The economic and practical use of this plant is minimal, as it is primarily a species of ecological and scientific value. It is not grown as a crop, and its populations are strictly protected in most of its natural habitats. Common threats to its survival include habitat destruction, overgrazing, and competition from invasive species that disrupt the delicate ecological balance of its native range.
