The Northern bird's-nest orchid (Neottia borealis) is a fascinating perennial herb belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a specialized myco-heterotrophic plant, meaning it entirely lacks chlorophyll and derives its nutrition from an obligate symbiotic relationship with subterranean fungi.
The natural range of this species extends across northern boreal forests in Eurasia. It typically inhabits moist, shaded environments characterized by deep leaf litter, which provides a stable environment for its fungal partners. The plant is rarely encountered due to its cryptic lifestyle and specific ecological requirements.
Botanically, the species is defined by its lack of green leaves and its pale, yellowish-brown stem. The name "bird's-nest" is derived from its short, fleshy, and densely clustered roots that form a knotted mass, resembling a bird's nest. Its flowers are small and arranged in a simple, lax spike, lacking the showy traits often associated with tropical orchids.
