Sander's tobacco (Nicotiana × sanderi) is an ornamental hybrid species belonging to the Solanaceae family. It is a crossbreed derived from Nicotiana alata and Nicotiana forgetiana, widely utilized in horticulture for its vibrant, star-shaped flowers and pleasant fragrance that intensifies during the evening hours.
Originating from the tropical regions of South America, this plant is cultivated globally as an annual in temperate zones, as it lacks cold hardiness and is highly sensitive to frost. Because of its adaptability and aesthetic appeal, it is commonly used in commercial floriculture, garden borders, and as a popular plant for container planting in urban environments.
Botanically, it is an herbaceous plant featuring erect, branching stems and large, slightly pubescent, green leaves that form a basal rosette. The flowers are typically trumpet-shaped and occur in shades ranging from carmine red to pink and white. The plant generally reaches heights between 30 and 90 cm, depending on the specific cultivar and growing conditions provided.
Cultivation requires well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. While the plant can tolerate partial shade, it performs best in full sun. Essential agronomic practices include consistent irrigation, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, and periodic fertilization with balanced NPK ratios to support continuous flower production throughout the summer season.
