Giant Hygrophila (Nomaphila stricta) is a perennial marsh plant belonging to the Acanthaceae family. Known commonly as "Lemon Bacopa" or "Lemon Synnema" in the aquarium trade, it is highly valued for its robust growth and distinctively fragrant, lanceolate leaves. It is a versatile species frequently used in the background of large aquaria and paludariums due to its vertical growth pattern.
Native to Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, this plant is naturally found in swampy habitats, riverbanks, and marshy wetlands. It is an amphibious plant capable of thriving both submerged and emersed. This evolutionary adaptation makes it a resilient choice for aquarists looking for a hardy species that can bridge the transition between water and land environments.
Botanically, Nomaphila stricta features a thick, woody stem and large, opposite leaves with a serrated texture. In its natural habitat or in humid garden conditions, it can grow quite tall, producing upright spikes of delicate, pale blue to violet flowers. The plant's root system is exceptionally vigorous, requiring nutrient-rich substrates to support its rapid biomass production.
Cultivation requirements for this species include high-intensity lighting and a warm environment, with water temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C (72°F–82°F). It requires a consistent supply of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and iron, to prevent leaf chlorosis. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain its shape, as the plant can quickly reach the water's surface, shading other flora in the tank.
The primary use of the Giant Hygrophila is ornamental, serving as a focal point or a background plant in aquascaping. While generally resistant to pests, it can be susceptible to deficiencies if trace elements are lacking in the water column. In emersed setups, it may occasionally encounter common garden pests like aphids, which are typically managed through controlled environmental humidity and standard integrated pest management practices.
