North American sea-oats (Uniola paniculata L.) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Recognized as a foundation species for coastal dune ecosystems, it acts as a primary builder of sand dunes, facilitating the stabilization of barrier islands across the southeastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico.

The plant originates from the sandy coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean. Its evolutionary adaptation to harsh maritime environments allows it to thrive in nutrient-poor, saline, and unstable soil conditions where few other plant species can survive. It is a defining component of the coastal landscape.

Botanically, this grass features long, slender, arching leaves and distinct, flattened spikelets arranged in large, drooping panicles. As it matures, the inflorescence turns a straw-yellow color. Its subterranean network of rhizomes is particularly robust, allowing the plant to spread rapidly and secure sand particles even under extreme wind pressure.

Agricultural and conservation requirements for this culture are centered on maximizing solar exposure and maintaining excellent drainage. Sea-oats are highly drought-tolerant and thrive in areas with high salinity. By trapping wind-blown sand, the plants naturally increase the height and volume of dunes, protecting inland areas from storm surges.
