Previously classified under the genus Lithocarpus, it is now recognized as a distinct monotypic genus endemic to the coastal regions of southwestern Oregon and California. The native habitat of the tanoak spans a variety of temperate climates, primarily in mountainous regions with high seasonal rainfall. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and is often found in association with Douglas fir and various oak species.
