The Japanese pond-lily (lat. Nuphar japonica) is a perennial aquatic plant belonging to the Nymphaeaceae family. This species is highly valued in both professional landscaping and amateur horticulture for its robust constitution and elegant appearance, making it a staple for garden ponds and large aquatic setups.
Originating from the wetlands and slow-moving streams of Japan, Korea, and adjacent Asian regions, the species is perfectly adapted to aquatic environments with nutrient-rich silty beds. Its ability to thrive in diverse water temperatures has allowed it to become a widely cultivated ornamental plant in various temperate climate zones around the globe.
Botanically, the plant features a thick, fleshy rhizome that anchors it firmly in the substrate. It produces a dimorphic leaf structure: submerged, lance-shaped leaves and floating, broader, heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are solitary, bright yellow, and held slightly above the water surface, providing a striking visual contrast against the deep green foliage.
