The plant features a robust, horizontal rhizome that anchors it firmly in the substrate. Its leaves are dimorphic: submerged leaves are thin and delicate, while floating leaves are leathery and cordate, providing stability on the water surface. The distinctive yellow, cup-shaped flowers provide significant aesthetic and biological value to the aquatic ecosystem.

The natural range of Nuphar lutea spans across Europe and parts of Asia, where it survives in temperate climates. To cultivate it successfully, one must ensure a nutrient-rich bottom soil and a stable water level.
