In non-tropical regions, it is recommended to cultivate the plant in containers placed in deeper zones of the pond to prevent the tubers from freezing during winter months.

Economically, the Mexican waterlily is primarily utilized for aesthetic purposes in landscape architecture and biodiversity management in ponds. It serves an essential role in providing cover for aquatic fauna and contributing to the oxygenation of the water column. Growers must monitor for common pests such as aphids and the waterlily beetle, which can damage the foliage, as well as ensure that water circulation is sufficient to prevent the development of root-borne pathogens.
