Recognized for its unique biological strategy, it functions as a hemiparasite, meaning it carries out photosynthesis but also attaches to the root systems of host plants to extract water and mineral nutrients via specialized structures called haustoria.
The species is primarily native to the mountainous regions of the Cevennes in France. Its distribution is highly localized, restricted to specific alpine and subalpine ecological niches. This plant is well-adapted to high-altitude environments, thriving on rocky, well-drained slopes that are subjected to significant seasonal temperature shifts.
Botanically, Odontites cebennensis features an erect stem with opposite leaves and a terminal, spike-like inflorescence. The flowers are typically pinkish-purple, attracting local pollinators such as wild bees. Its life cycle is synchronized with the growth of surrounding grasses, which act as primary hosts for the plant's development.
