The origin of this species is cosmopolitan, and it is found globally in freshwater habitats, including ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. It typically acts as an epiphyte, attaching itself to other submerged plants or inanimate substrates, where it thrives by absorbing dissolved nutrients directly from the water column.
From a botanical standpoint, O. cardiacum is characterized by its distinct reproductive structures, including oogonia and antheridia. One of its most identifying features during cell division is the formation of specialized apical caps on the cell walls, which are produced through a unique ring-forming mechanism, distinguishing it from other genera of green algae.
