It is primarily utilized in ornamental horticulture and rock gardens.

The species is native to western North America, spanning areas from British Columbia down to California. It thrives in open, well-draining habitats such as meadows, rocky slopes, and light woodlands. Its evolutionary adaptation allows it to utilize early spring moisture for rapid growth, followed by a dormant phase during the hot, dry summer months.
