Oncosperma tigillarium, commonly known as the nibung palm, is a distinctive species of palm in the Arecaceae family. This clustering palm is native to the swamp forests and coastal regions of Southeast Asia, ranging from Thailand to the Philippines. It is widely recognized for its high, slender, spiny trunks that grow in dense clumps.
The botanical characteristics of this plant include a height of up to 25 meters and a diameter of about 15 centimeters per stem. The trunks are covered in long, needle-like black spines, which serve as a natural defense mechanism. The plant is monoecious and produces small fruits, which are dispersed primarily by birds and small animals within its native forest habitat.
Regarding climate and soil requirements, Oncosperma tigillarium is specifically adapted to tropical lowland climates with high humidity and abundant precipitation. It thrives in peat-rich, waterlogged soils where other vegetation might struggle. Artificial cultivation requires mimicking these swampy conditions, as the plant is highly sensitive to soil drainage and moisture fluctuations.
