The Attica bee orchid (Ophrys attica) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a highly specialized species that represents the unique biodiversity of Mediterranean grasslands, known for its complex biological mechanism of pseudocopulation to attract pollinators.

The native range of this species is confined primarily to the eastern Mediterranean, with its stronghold in Greece and the surrounding Aegean islands. It thrives in open, sunny habitats such as limestone hillsides, dry meadows, and thin scrublands, where it has adapted to intense seasonal fluctuations in water availability.

Botanically, the plant develops underground tubers that remain dormant during the heat of summer. The stem typically reaches up to 40 centimeters in height and features a basal rosette of leaves. The most distinct feature is the labellum (lip) of the flower, which mimics the appearance and scent of female bees to entice male insects, ensuring the species' reproductive success.

As a wild species, it is not cultivated for agricultural purposes and is famously difficult to propagate in artificial environments. Its growth requirements are strictly linked to its native soil chemistry, specifically calcareous substrates, and an obligate relationship with specialized mycorrhizal fungi that are necessary for seed germination and nutrient uptake.

The species is primarily managed through habitat conservation programs rather than traditional agronomy. It faces significant pressure from land-use changes, such as overgrazing or urbanization. Common phytosanitary issues include fungal root rot triggered by poor drainage and damage from selective insect herbivory. Protection of these populations is essential for maintaining the ecological integrity of Mediterranean plant communities.
