This orchid originates from the Mediterranean region, with a range extending across Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Near East. It thrives in open, sun-drenched habitats, such as calcareous grasslands, scrublands, and forest clearings, where the soil is nutrient-poor but well-drained.
Botanically, the yellow bee orchid is distinguished by its vibrant, yellow-bordered labellum and slender foliage arranged in a basal rosette. It grows from a pair of subterranean tubers that store carbohydrates and water. These tubers are essential for the plant's survival during the dormant summer period, characteristic of the Mediterranean climate.
Cultivation of this species is notoriously difficult due to its obligate relationship with specific mycorrhizal fungi, which are required for seed germination and plant growth. Successful propagation requires mimicking the natural soil composition, emphasizing high alkalinity and excellent drainage to prevent tuber rot. Standard fertilizers are often ineffective and can even be detrimental to the plant's health.
In terms of agricultural or economic use, the yellow bee orchid is not considered a crop. It is highly valued among botanical enthusiasts and conservationists, though it faces severe threats from habitat destruction. Common health issues include fungal root diseases, often triggered by improper moisture management, and aphid infestations that can severely weaken the plant during the flowering season.
