The native range of this species is largely confined to southwestern France. It thrives in specific ecological niches, typically inhabiting limestone-rich grasslands, open slopes, and calcareous soils where competition from taller, more aggressive plant species is minimal due to the soil's low nutrient availability.
Botanically, the plant develops from two subterranean tubers that facilitate survival during dormancy. It produces a rosette of basal leaves, followed by a short, erect stem bearing a small inflorescence. The labellum of the flower is notably complex, often featuring a velvet-like texture and specific color patterns designed to attract solitary bees.
Agro-ecological requirements for Ophrys santonica are quite strict. It requires well-drained, nutrient-poor soil and cannot tolerate high levels of synthetic fertilizers. A critical factor in its success is the presence of specific soil fungi (mycorrhizae), which are essential for seedling germination and nutrient uptake in adult plants, as the plant relies heavily on this symbiosis.
This species is not used as an agricultural crop and does not have commercial applications in food or industrial production. Its primary value is ecological, serving as a key indicator of undisturbed, high-quality grasslands.
