Botanically, the plant consists of flattened, fleshy pads known as cladodes, which function as leaves. These pads are covered in spines and small, barbed bristles called glochids. Its root system is shallow but highly efficient at gathering superficial soil moisture.
Agricultural success with this crop relies on full sun exposure and well-drained soil. It is intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rapid root rot. Standard cultivation practices are low-input, requiring minimal fertilization and irrigation once the plants are established.
