The plant is native to central and southern Mexico but has been introduced to many arid and semi-arid regions globally. It is widely cultivated in regions such as Ethiopia, parts of South Africa, and the Mediterranean basin. Its ability to thrive in poor soils and extreme heat makes it a vital resource in marginal lands where other crops fail.
