Slender bird's-foot

Slender bird's-foot (Ornithopus pinnatus) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. This crop is highly valued in sustainable agriculture for its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and improve soil fertility, making it an excellent candidate for sandy or nutrient-poor land.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean basin and Western Europe. It is currently found in various temperate climates where it serves as a reliable forage source. Due to its adaptability, it has been introduced into agricultural systems that prioritize low-input soil management and pasture restoration.

Morphologically, the plant is characterized by pinnate leaves and small yellow flowers arranged in umbel-like clusters. The seed pods are distinctively curved and articulated, resembling the clawed foot of a bird, which gives the species its common English name. It exhibits a spreading growth habit that provides good ground cover.

Cultivation requires well-drained, light soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. The species is relatively drought-tolerant once established, though it responds well to moderate moisture. In terms of agronomy, it is often sown in early spring, requiring shallow drilling and minimal fertilizer application due to its symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
