Because the tubers are prone to rot, careful water management is crucial during the plant's dormant summer phase. Soil aeration and minimal disturbance are essential for root development. Propagation is challenging because the seeds rely on mycorrhizal fungi for germination, which makes large-scale agricultural production complex.

The economic importance of this orchid is tied to the production of salep, a traditional flour made from dried tubers. Salep is utilized for its nutritious, starchy properties and its medicinal use as a soothing agent for digestive disorders. Typical phytosanitary concerns include root rot fungi, which occur if soil drainage is insufficient, and pests such as aphids that target the succulent developing spikes.
