Oreocereus leucotrichus is a distinct succulent plant species belonging to the Cactaceae family. Often referred to as a white-haired cactus, it is distinguished by its columnar stems covered in long, dense, silky hairs which serve as thermal insulation against the harsh climatic conditions of its native habitat.

The species is indigenous to the high-altitude Andean regions of Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. Growing at elevations exceeding 3,000 meters, these plants have evolved to withstand extreme solar radiation, freezing nocturnal temperatures, and prolonged drought. This environment dictates the specific care requirements for cultivation.

Botanically, Oreocereus leucotrichus features a slow-growing habit, eventually developing into a multi-stemmed column. The stems are armed with sharp, robust spines that are partially obscured by the dense white trichomes.
