Greek oregano (Origanum heracleoticum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is widely recognized for its strong, spicy aroma and is considered one of the highest-quality species of oregano for culinary and medicinal purposes. It is often referred to as "true" oregano in professional agricultural contexts.
The plant is native to the Mediterranean region, with its natural range stretching across Greece, the Balkans, and parts of Turkey. It is well-adapted to Mediterranean climates characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Commercially, it is cultivated extensively throughout Southern Europe and similar climates globally for its high yield of essential oils.
Botanically, it is a low-growing subshrub that can reach heights of 50–70 cm. The leaves are oval-shaped, dark green, and covered in fine hairs that store the essential oils, which are responsible for its pungent fragrance. The plant produces small, white or pinkish flowers arranged in terminal clusters, typically appearing from mid-summer through early autumn.
To ensure high productivity, Greek oregano requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil. It thrives in soils with a slightly alkaline pH, such as sandy or loamy textures. While the plant is inherently drought-tolerant once established, irrigation is recommended during the early growth stages or periods of extreme drought. Good agricultural practice involves regular harvesting of the upper stems to promote bushier growth.
