Orlaya

Orlaya (Orlaya daucorlaya, often known as Orlaya grandiflora) is a charming annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is widely recognized in the horticultural world for its intricate, lace-like white flower heads, which bring an airy and ethereal quality to any garden border or floral arrangement.

Native to the Mediterranean region and parts of the Caucasus, this plant thrives in environments that offer plenty of sunshine and well-drained soils. Its natural habitat includes rocky slopes and meadows, which explains its resilience and ability to grow in various garden soils, provided they are not waterlogged or overly compacted.

Botanically, the plant features finely divided, fern-like foliage that provides a lush green base for the striking flower umbels. The flowers are notable for their unique structure: the outer petals of the individual florets are significantly larger than the inner ones, creating a beautiful «fringe» effect. This floral display typically lasts throughout the summer months.

Cultivation of this species is relatively straightforward. It requires a sunny position and prefers alkaline or neutral, free-draining soil.
