Star-of-Bethlehem

Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum collinum) is a herbaceous bulbous perennial plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. This species is highly valued in horticulture for its ability to produce delicate, star-shaped white flowers during the early spring season, making it a perfect candidate for seasonal garden displays.

The plant originates from regions in Southern Europe, the Caucasus, and Western Asia. In its natural habitat, it thrives in sunny, open areas, such as rocky slopes and dry meadows. Due to this evolutionary history, the plant has developed a high tolerance for varying environmental conditions and is well-adapted to different temperate climates where it is now cultivated.

Botanically, Ornithogalum collinum is characterized by a small, spherical bulb that produces slender, grass-like basal leaves. The flower stalks bear clusters of star-shaped blossoms, usually white with a distinctive green stripe on the back of each tepal. It prefers full sun exposure to semi-shade conditions. Maintenance tasks include light weeding and ensuring the plants are not waterlogged during their summer dormant phase.

The primary use of this culture is strictly ornamental, frequently utilized in rock gardens, gravel beds, or as a naturalizing plant in meadow-style gardens. Typical health issues include fungal root rots caused by over-irrigation. Pest management is usually straightforward, focusing on preventing bulb mites which can affect the overall vitality of the planting.
