Crested star-of-Bethlehem

Crested star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum comosum) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. This plant is highly regarded in ornamental gardening for its delicate, star-shaped flowers that bloom in early spring, bringing aesthetic value to garden landscapes.

The species is native to Central and Southern Europe. It naturally thrives in dry, rocky meadows and shrubby areas, which indicates its high resilience to poor soil conditions and its preference for well-drained environments. Its natural habitat dictates its relatively low-maintenance nature.

Botanically, it features a small, ovoid bulb and narrow, linear leaves often marked with a central white stripe. The inflorescence is a dense cluster of white, star-shaped flowers, each marked with a distinctive green stripe on the reverse. The apical flowers are typically sterile, forming the signature tuft or "crest" that gives the plant its common name.

Regarding cultivation, it requires a sunny or partially shaded spot with excellent drainage. Soil aeration is critical; heavy clay soils should be amended with grit or sand to prevent bulb rot. While it is hardy and capable of surviving cold climates, the main focus of care remains the prevention of waterlogging during its dormant phase.

The primary use of Ornithogalum comosum is in rock gardens, border planting, and informal spring meadows. It is generally resistant to most garden pests; however, like other members of the Asparagaceae family, it may be susceptible to bulb mites or fungal diseases if grown in persistently wet, compacted soil conditions.
