Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum pyramidale) is a bulbous perennial plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. The species is highly regarded for its distinctive, tall, pyramid-shaped inflorescences comprised of numerous white, star-like flowers with a green longitudinal stripe on the outer perianth segments.
Originating from Central and Southern Europe, this plant is naturally adapted to dry grasslands and rocky habitats. In agricultural and horticultural contexts, it is classified as a robust ornamental bulb. Its natural distribution is largely concentrated in the Mediterranean basin, where it thrives in well-drained, lime-rich soils with full exposure to sunlight.
Botanically, it features a tunicated bulb and narrow, grass-like basal leaves that emerge in early spring. The inflorescence, acting as a terminal raceme, can reach significant heights, providing a striking structural element in garden borders. Unlike other spring bulbs, the foliage tends to stay green for a considerable period during the growing season.
