The Hair-leaved Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum trichophyllum) is a bulbous herbaceous plant within the Asparagaceae family. Known for its delicate appearance and resilience in arid conditions, it represents a unique group of geophytes that have successfully adapted to harsh environments where water availability is strictly seasonal.
The plant originates from the dry regions spanning Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Western Asia. Its natural habitat includes open grasslands, rocky slopes, and semi-deserts. Due to its evolutionary history, it is an ephemeroid, meaning it completes its life cycle during the short spring period when moisture is abundant, then enters a deep dormancy.
Botanically, Ornithogalum trichophyllum is distinguished by its extremely narrow, hair-like foliage, which gives the plant its name. The flowers are typically white, often featuring a distinct green central stripe on the reverse of the petals, which provides a striking contrast against the foliage. The bulb is the primary organ for nutrient storage, enabling survival through hot and dry summers.
For successful cultivation, strict adherence to specific environmental conditions is required. The plant demands well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rapid bulb decay. Key agricultural practices include:
