As an obligate holoparasite, it lacks chlorophyll entirely and relies exclusively on its host plant to obtain water, minerals, and carbon compounds through specialized root-like structures known as haustoria, which penetrate the vascular tissue of the host's roots.

The species primarily inhabits regions across Europe, where it is found in specific ecological niches such as dry grasslands, limestone slopes, and steppes. Its distribution is strictly linked to the presence of host plants from the genus Libanotis (specifically Libanotis pyrenaica). Unlike typical crops, it does not have a native range associated with agriculture but rather with specific wild plant communities.

Botanically, Orobanche bartlingii is characterized by an unbranched, erect stem ranging from 20 to 50 cm in height, with a glandular, pubescent surface. The leaves are reduced to inconspicuous scales. The inflorescence forms a dense, spike-like raceme featuring tubular, zygomorphic flowers that are typically yellowish-brown to dark purple in color, adapted for pollination by specific insects.

The life cycle of this parasite is highly synchronized with its host. From an agronomic perspective, it does not require cultivation, irrigation, or soil fertilization. Its seeds are minute and dust-like, capable of remaining dormant in the soil for several years until they detect the chemical signals (strigolactones) exuded by the host's roots, which trigger germination.

Regarding its impact and management, Orobanche bartlingii acts as a significant stressor for its host plants, potentially reducing their vigor and reproduction rates. While it is not a common agricultural pest, it is studied within the context of weed science and plant pathology. Typical threats to the parasite itself include specialized insect herbivores, such as larvae from the Phytomyza genus, and various fungal pathogens that thrive in high-humidity environments.
