This species is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Central and Southern Europe. Its habitat is typically characterized by open, rocky grasslands and areas where its specific hosts—primarily plants from the Fabaceae family such as Trifolium or Cytisus—are abundant. It does not engage in photosynthesis, thus its development is strictly tied to the vitality of the host's root system.

Botanically, Orobanche gracilis presents an erect, glandular-pubescent stem ranging from 10 to 40 cm in height. The inflorescence is a spike of dark-red or brownish-yellow flowers, which are highly specialized for pollination. The leaves are vestigial, appearing only as small scales along the stem, as the plant has no need for foliage to process solar energy.

Climate and soil requirements are dictated by the host plant's preferences. It thrives in well-drained, lime-rich soils in temperate to warm environments. Agricultural management is challenging; effective control requires strict crop rotation with non-host species, soil solarization in some climates, and the development of resistant crop varieties to prevent the attachment of the parasite's haustoria to the host roots.

The economic impact of the slender broomrape is strictly negative as it causes severe yield losses in legume crops. By draining water, minerals, and carbohydrates from the host, the parasite weakens the plant, stunt its growth, and eventually leads to crop failure.
