Hermon broomrape (Orobanche hermonis) is a parasitic plant species belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. It is an obligate root parasite, meaning it cannot survive or complete its life cycle without attaching to the root system of a host plant. Lacking chlorophyll and the ability to perform photosynthesis, it relies entirely on the host plant for water, minerals, and carbon compounds, effectively draining the energy reserves of the crop.

The native range of this species is centered around the Middle East, specifically the mountainous areas near Mount Hermon. It has since spread across various Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, where intensive carrot and vegetable production is common. Its distribution is closely linked to the presence of suitable hosts, and it has become a significant constraint for agricultural productivity in these arid and semi-arid environments.

Botanically, the plant remains subterranean for most of its life cycle, appearing above ground only to produce flowering stalks. These stalks are typically fleshy, yellowish-brown or purplish, and bear flowers in a dense terminal spike. The seeds are minuscule, dust-like, and are produced in massive quantities. They remain dormant in the soil for many years, germinating only when they detect chemical signals (strigolactones) released by the roots of a nearby host plant.

The agronomic requirements for Orobanche hermonis are primarily defined by the needs of its hosts. It thrives in well-drained, light-textured soils where root-to-root contact is facilitated. Management strategies focus on breaking the parasite's life cycle. This includes using long-term crop rotation with non-host species, soil solarization, and the application of herbicides that target the parasitic attachment process. Preventive measures like cleaning farm machinery are also critical to avoid spreading seeds between fields.

In economic terms, Hermon broomrape is considered a highly destructive quarantine weed. It does not have any beneficial хозяйственное (agricultural) use; rather, it is a major economic burden. Crops infested by this parasite show severe stunting, reduced yields, and lower overall quality. Furthermore, it can act as a bridge for the transmission of various plant viruses, adding a secondary layer of complexity to the damage it causes in carrot and related apiaceous crop fields.
