Broad-scaled broomrape (Orobanche latisquama) is a fascinating plant species belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. As a holoparasitic plant, it lacks chlorophyll entirely, meaning it is incapable of photosynthesis. It survives by establishing parasitic connections via haustoria to the roots of host plants, through which it draws water and nutrients essential for its life cycle.
The native distribution of this species is largely confined to the Mediterranean region and parts of the Iberian Peninsula. It is ecologically specialized, typically targeting specific shrubby plants such as Rosmarinus species. Unlike some of its more aggressive cousins that plague major grain crops, this species is more focused on native vegetation, though its biological strategy remains equally complex.
Botanically, Orobanche latisquama is characterized by a fleshy, stout stem that can range from light yellow to purplish-brown. It is covered in scale-like leaves.
