Wormwood broomrape (Orobanche lucorum) is a root-parasitic plant belonging to the family Orobanchaceae. Being a holoparasite, it lacks chlorophyll and is incapable of performing photosynthesis, relying entirely on the root system of its host plant to obtain necessary nutrients, water, and minerals for growth and reproduction.

This species exhibits a high degree of host specificity, primarily targeting plants within the Artemisia (wormwood) genus. It is native to various regions across Europe and the Caucasus. The broomrape typically inhabits open, sunny environments such as grasslands, meadows, and steppe regions where its specific hosts are abundant.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a fleshy, upright stem that emerges above ground only during the flowering stage. The stems usually reach heights between 15 and 40 centimeters and are typically colored in shades of brownish-yellow or purplish-brown. The leaves are reduced to small, scale-like structures distributed along the length of the stem.

The inflorescence consists of a dense spike of two-lipped flowers. These flowers are pollinated by insects, leading to the production of thousands of tiny, dust-like seeds. These seeds possess remarkable longevity in the soil, remaining dormant until they detect specific chemical signals (strigolactones) exuded by the roots of a compatible host.

The ecological impact of Orobanche lucorum is primarily related to its parasitic pressure on wormwood populations. While not considered a major threat to intensive agriculture like some of its relatives, it can decrease the vigor and health of host plants. Controlling broomrape involves long-term management strategies, including the removal of infected hosts before seed set to prevent the accumulation of the seed bank in the soil.
