Branched broomrape is a parasitic flowering plant within the Orobanchaceae family. As an obligate parasite, it lacks chlorophyll and leaves, meaning it cannot perform photosynthesis. Instead, it attaches itself to the root systems of various host plants to extract essential nutrients, water, and minerals, which severely hampers the development of the host.

Originally native to parts of Southern Europe and Central Asia, the weed has spread across several continents due to international trade and agricultural movement. It primarily infests crops such as tomatoes, tobacco, sunflowers, hemp, and various cucurbits. The plant's ability to survive in various soil types makes it a highly resilient and difficult-to-control agricultural problem.

The morphology of branched broomrape consists of a thin, yellowish to purple stem rising from the ground. Its root system is modified into haustoria, which penetrate the host's vascular tissue. The plant produces thousands of microscopic seeds that are easily dispersed by wind, water, and contaminated farm machinery, maintaining their viability in the soil for over a decade.

Agricultural success in managing this parasite relies on understanding its life cycle, which is triggered by chemical exudates from host roots. Control strategies are complex and require an integrated approach: using trap crops that stimulate germination without allowing attachment, implementing long-term crop rotations, and applying precise chemical controls that target the parasite during its development.

Economically, branched broomrape is a major threat to agricultural productivity. Heavy infestations can lead to total crop failure, as the parasite essentially drains the plant dry. Furthermore, its status as a regulated quarantine organism means that discovery in a field often leads to trade restrictions on produce grown in the affected area, causing significant financial losses for farmers.
