Description
Greater broomrape (Latin Orobanche rapum-genistae) is a distinct parasitic plant species belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. As an obligate parasite, it lacks chlorophyll and cannot perform photosynthesis, which forces it to extract all essential nutrients and water from the root systems of its host plants.
The native range of this species is primarily focused on Europe, the Mediterranean region, and parts of North Africa. It is ecologically tied to specific host plants, most notably shrubs from the Genista and Cytisus genera. Its habitat preference includes well-drained soils, often on hillsides or meadows where host populations remain stable and abundant.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a stout, fleshy stem ranging from 20 to 80 centimeters in height, typically displaying yellow-brown or reddish hues. It produces a dense, spike-like inflorescence consisting of numerous tubular flowers. The plant's reproductive strategy is based on the production of a vast quantity of microscopic seeds that remain viable in the soil for years waiting for specific chemical signals from the host roots.
Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the plant is not cultivated but managed as a parasite. In areas where host legumes are of agricultural importance, management strategies include deep ploughing to bury seeds, rotating crops to interrupt the parasite’s lifecycle, and physical removal of stems before seed maturity to prevent further infestation of the soil bank.

It does not provide direct yield, and its impact on agriculture is restricted by the specificity of its hosts.
