As an obligate parasite, it lacks chlorophyll and is entirely incapable of photosynthesis, relying exclusively on the vascular system of its host plant to obtain water, minerals, and organic nutrients through specialized root structures known as haustoria.

The native distribution area of this species is associated with arid and semi-arid environments. It thrives in regions where its specific host plants, typically belonging to the Asteraceae family (such as species of the Santolina genus), are naturally established. These habitats are characterized by low humidity and sandy or rocky soils that support the growth of the host's root network.

Botanically, the plant consists of a fleshy, unbranched stem covered with scale-like leaves rather than true foliage. The inflorescence is a terminal spike or raceme containing numerous small flowers. Since the plant has no independent root system, its life cycle is dictated by the attachment to the host's roots, which occurs shortly after the germination of the dust-like seeds.

Requirements for growth are strictly dependent on the presence of the host. Germination of the seeds is triggered by chemical exudates released by the roots of the host plant.
