Teucrium broomrape (scientific name: Orobanche teucrii) is an obligate root parasite classified within the Orobanchaceae family. Unlike conventional crops, this plant lacks chlorophyll entirely and cannot perform photosynthesis. It derives all its required water, nutrients, and carbon from the roots of its host plant, typically species within the Teucrium genus, by penetrating the host's vascular system with specialized root-like structures called haustoria.

The native range of Orobanche teucrii spans across Central and Southern Europe, extending into parts of Western Asia. It typically thrives in calcareous, well-drained soils, often appearing on grasslands, stony slopes, and forest edges where its host plants are present. In an agricultural context, it acts as a significant weed that challenges the health and yield potential of cultivated plants susceptible to its parasitism.

Botanically, this species is characterized by a fleshy, yellowish-brown to reddish stem emerging from the ground, usually growing to a height of 15-40 cm. The stem is covered with scale-like leaves and terminates in a spike-shaped inflorescence. The flowers are zygomorphic and vary in color, often showing shades of yellow or purple. The seeds are extremely small and numerous, allowing for long-term dormancy in the soil profile.

Cultural and management practices for controlling broomrape rely heavily on prevention and disruption of its lifecycle. Key strategies include practicing long-term crop rotation with non-host species, such as cereals, which prevent the parasite from completing its life cycle. Deep soil cultivation can sometimes help, but the most effective management is the early detection and manual removal of flowering stalks to prevent the replenishment of the soil seed bank.
