The plant is native to the tropical regions of Brazil, where it primarily colonizes rocky outcrops and stone crevices. Its evolutionary history has endowed it with the ability to store minimal water reserves, making it a highly resilient species when grown in controlled environments like greenhouses or indoor collections.
Botanically, this species is characterized by its stiff, spiny-edged leaves arranged in a rosette form. Its most distinct feature is the development of long, trailing stolons that allow the plant to spread across its growing medium, which explains the Latin epithet vagans (meaning wandering). Its inflorescence typically consists of small white flowers nestled deep within the rosette.
