Rock's Peony

Rock's Peony (Paeonia rockii) is a distinct species of woody peony within the Paeoniaceae family. Unlike herbaceous perennials, this species develops persistent, woody stems that allow it to grow into a substantial shrub, often reaching heights between 1.5 to 2 meters under favorable growing conditions.

The native habitat of this plant is located in the mountainous regions of Gansu Province, China. Due to its evolutionary history in high-altitude environments, the species exhibits exceptional cold hardiness and robustness, making it a highly valued plant for gardens in temperate climates that experience harsh winter conditions.

Botanically, the species is defined by its large, showy flowers, which frequently display a striking dark maroon or purple blotch at the base of the petals. The foliage is complex, deeply lobed, and provides a rich green backdrop that contributes to the plant's ornamental value throughout the entire growing season.

Agricultural and gardening requirements focus on the necessity of well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH level. While Rock's Peony thrives in full sun, it benefits from light shade in extremely hot climates. Irrigation should be carefully managed to ensure the soil remains moist but never waterlogged to avoid root rot issues.
