The native habitat of Panax japonicus spans the mountainous regions of Japan, China, and the Himalayas. In nature, it thrives in shaded, cool, and humid environments under forest canopies. Due to the limited availability of wild specimens, there is a growing agricultural interest in commercializing its cultivation using controlled agro-forestry systems.
Botanically, Japanese ginseng is characterized by its horizontal, knotty rhizome, which develops over several years. The plant produces a single upright stem with a whorl of compound leaves and small, umbrella-like inflorescences. Reproduction primarily occurs through seeds, though the process is slow due to the natural dormancy requirements of the seed embryos.

As a shade-loving species, Japanese ginseng must be protected from direct sunlight, usually by employing artificial shading structures or growing it within forest clearings where natural light is filtered.
