Vine-mesquite
Panicum obtusum Kunth
Description
Vine-mesquite (Panicum obtusum Kunth) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized for its aggressive spreading habit, utilizing stolons to create extensive colonies that stabilize the soil and provide durable ground cover in challenging environments.
The native range of this species encompasses the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is most commonly found in swales, floodplains, and intermittently dry watercourses where moisture accumulates after heavy rains. This preference for moist, lowland habitats allows it to thrive in regions characterized by distinct cycles of drought and saturation.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its thick, knotty stems which can grow up to 70 centimeters in height. The inflorescence is a panicle with blunt, rounded spikelets, which gives the plant its scientific name, obtusum. The grass produces a deep, fibrous root system that allows it to access water deep within the soil profile during dry seasons.
Agronomically, Vine-mesquite prefers well-drained loamy soils but displays remarkable versatility across various soil types, including those with slightly higher clay content. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and heat-resistant. Maintenance involves managing grazing pressure to ensure the health of the stolons, as excessive trampling can hinder its ability to propagate vegetatively.
The primary agricultural use of Vine-mesquite is as forage for livestock. It is considered a fair-to-good forage plant, particularly during the growing season. Beyond its nutritional value, it serves a critical role in conservation efforts, being extensively planted to mitigate soil erosion on rangelands and along embankment slopes. It is rarely susceptible to major pests, making it a low-input choice for land rehabilitation.
