Originating in the Mediterranean region, the long-headed poppy has successfully naturalized throughout much of Europe, North Africa, and parts of North America. This includes a combination of cultural practices, such as crop rotation, and the judicious use of selective herbicides during the early seedling stage.

While primarily considered a problematic weed in crop production, the long-headed poppy serves as a subject of botanical study due to its specific alkaloid content. Integrated pest management strategies to mitigate its impact on crop yields include:
