The Arctic poppy (Papaver radicatum) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Poppy family (Papaveraceae). This species is specifically adapted to the harsh environments of the Arctic and mountainous regions. It features a robust taproot system that enables it to thrive in nutrient-poor and rocky substrates where most agricultural crops would perish.

The native range of the Arctic poppy spans across the circumpolar regions, including Northern Canada, Greenland, Northern Europe, and Siberia. It is primarily found in tundra habitats, rocky slopes, and glacier moraines. This plant is a pioneer species, capable of colonizing unstable soils and surviving in areas characterized by permafrost and extreme temperature fluctuations.

Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its hairy stems and leaves, which serve as an insulation mechanism against dry, icy winds. Its flowers are relatively large and often bright yellow, though white variants exist, designed to maximize heat absorption and attract the few pollinators available in the short Arctic summer. The plant typically stays low to the ground to avoid mechanical damage from wind and snow.

Cultivation requirements for the Arctic poppy center on recreating its natural habitat. It demands exceptionally well-drained, gritty, and lean soil. Attempting to grow this species in rich, organic, or water-retentive soils will almost certainly lead to crown rot. Consistent moisture is required only during the active growing phase, after which the soil must be allowed to dry out significantly.

The primary use for this species is ornamental gardening, specifically in rock gardens or alpine collections. While it is hardy and resilient, it is susceptible to typical fungal issues such as powdery mildew or root decay if grown in poorly ventilated or humid conditions. The plant rarely suffers from pest infestations due to its bitter-tasting sap, which serves as a natural defense mechanism against herbivores.
