Peraxilla tetrapetala, commonly known as red mistletoe, is a hemiparasitic plant belonging to the Loranthaceae family. This species is endemic to New Zealand and is renowned for its vibrant flowers and complex relationship with its host trees, primarily the southern beech (Nothofagus) species.

The geographic range of this plant is restricted to the forests of New Zealand. Unlike traditional crops, it does not have a cultivated range. Instead, it occupies specific niches within temperate rainforests where the environmental conditions, such as high humidity and stable temperatures, support the survival of both the parasite and its host tree.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a specialized root system known as a haustorium, which penetrates the bark of the host to absorb sap. A fascinating adaptation is the flower mechanism: the buds are designed to be "tripped" by native honeyeater birds, which force the petals open to access the nectar, simultaneously ensuring pollination of the plant.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the plant is not a subject of agriculture. Its "management" focuses entirely on conservation biology. Maintaining the health of the host trees is critical. Any degradation in the population of native bird species significantly impacts the reproductive success of the mistletoe, as it relies almost exclusively on avian vectors for pollination.
